Paddles
Whatever way you plan on paddling your Sevylor Colorado there are a few things you should know.

If you plan on paddling your Sevylor Colorado with canoe paddles then you should choose carefully. There are a multitude of methods choosing the correct length but these should all be regarded as a rough guide.

It is the length of the shaft of the canoe paddle which is important as this determines the positioning of your hands on the paddle. For  solo or stern paddlers longer is better, for bow paddlers a slightly shorter paddle makes life easier.

The Colorado is not difficult to paddle, it is wide boat though, which makes it very stable, but does mean that for if you're planning on using kayak paddles then you will find it easier with paddles of at least 220cm.

Combination Paddle

The combination paddle pictured above makes one kayak paddle or two canoe paddles and is a cheap alternative to buying both types but it is a compromise. The kayak paddle is just a little too short which makes efficient paddling a little difficult. The length of the canoe paddle is fine but the blade is too short and lacks power.

Personal Floatation Devices
A Personal Floatation Device (PFD) is not an optional accessory. They should be worn every time you step into the boat.

What is a PFD?
Put simply it is a buoyancy aid which will help keep you afloat in the water, and requires active participation by the user, i.e. You need to be able to swim! On many waters in the United Kingdom you will be prevented from paddling if you are not wearing one. They are available in child and adult sizes, and may be of a unisex design or specifically made for women. Pets aren't forgotten and some manufacturers even cater for dogs.

There are international standards and rules governing PFDs so in practical terms choice will be governed by price, comfort and fashion. A US Coast Guard Class type III PFD is the standard choice for most paddlers, although if you are planning on using the Colorado in Grade III white water some paddlers reccomend a US Coast Guard Class type V
PFD.

Clothing & Footwear

I quickly learned that there are more opinions about clothing than anything else. It is simple, wetsuit socks inside wetsuit boots or sandals, if I am using a kayak paddle I will wear waterproof over-trousers because I know I will be getting wet and a light rain jacket. Canoe paddling means I can wear whatever I like. I always dress for the weather and I have never gone wrong.
